South Korea has many special holidays just for couples. Today, we're looking at White Day and everything you need to know about White Day gifts!
How Did White Day Start?
White Day is celebrated on March 14th, one month after Valentine’s Day. On this day, the men give their girlfriends gifts. The tradition dates back to 1977, when it was first held by Ishimura Manseido, a candy store in Fukuoka, Japan.

The holiday was first called "Marshmallow Day," since the store sold marshmallows. However, it was renamed "White Day" in 1980 by the National Confectionary Industry Association to expand gift options. The color white represents innocence and purity, especially when it comes to first love.
Besides Japan and South Korea, White Day is also celebrated in China, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
What Are Typical White Day Gifts?
Traditionally, men are supposed to give presents that are worth three times what the women gave them on Valentine's Day. So White Day gifts have evolved to include luxury jewelry, handbags, perfumes, and even expensive lingerie!
But don't worry. If you're looking for something simple, there are cheaper options:

Flowers: Not only do they express love and appreciation, but they also represent beauty and life. Flower stores sell white roses and special bouquets for this occasion.

Stationery: As simple or elegant as you'd like. Postcards with romantic messages or pretty notebooks are the perfect gifts for the special woman in your life.
White Day gifts don't have to be expensive or even white. Your gift should reflect your special person and what she would love to receive. Check out this blog for some more White Day gift ideas.
