BTS 2030 BUSAN WORLD EXPO AMBASSADORS
To clear up this past week’s confusion, BTS are not disbanding. While doing solo work, they’ll continue with group activities. In fact, they will be promoting as ambassadors for the 2030 Busan World Expo.

HYBE CEO Park Ji-won confirmed the news on June 16th in a statement to Busan Ilbo. He said that Busan’s mayor Park Heong-joon had asked that BTS act as goodwill ambassadors. According to Park Ji-won, “all members happily agreed” to the request. He explained:
“The company and artists think that the World Expo is an event that brings a positive influence on the whole world and we think that it is a meaningful event beyond the Olympics and World Cup. At the same time, we decided that it was an important event for the sake of the country and the city’s society.”

With a huge fanbase, it’s hoped that BTS will attract interest and attention to the Expo. Jungkook and Jimin were both born in Busan, something that Park Ji-won wanted to highlight:
“Since we have Busan-born artists, we also lightly talked that it would be effective to use words such as ‘Jungkook’s hometown, Busan.”

BTS are the third group/individual to be named ambassadors for the 2030 Busan World Expo. The other ambassadors will be Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae and AI influencer Rozy.

International Registered Exhibitions, or World Expos, happen every five years and involve different activities and displays centered around a universal theme. The 2020 World Expo was held in Dubai, UAE (moved to 2021-2022 because of the pandemic), and the 2025 World Expo will be held in Osaka, Japan.

South Korea is one of four countries submitting a bid to hold the 2030 World Expo. The other countries are Italy, Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia. The host country will be chosen in 2023.
