Back in 1996 people of Boryeong, generally recognized as Daecheon, is a city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea used to make cosmetics from the mud found near the beach.

It is believed that the muds are full of minerals, bentonites, and germaniums. Basically, to promote these cosmetics The Boryeong Mud Festival was started from the year 1998.

During this festival, several large attractions are established in the seafront area of Daecheon. These mostly include a mud pool, mud prison, mudslides, and mud skiing competitions. For body painting colored mud is also produced.

A large stage is organized on the beach, which is used for various other visual attractions, live music, and competitions.

Apart from this locals sell cosmetics made of mud from Boryeong. Various health and beauty clinics offer acupuncture, massages, and other therapies utilizing the remedial qualities of the mud.

Although the festival takes place for around two weeks in July every year, it is most popular during the final weekend, which is celebrated by Korea's western population. Thanks to word of mouth, the entertainment world, and interesting photographs of numerous people covered in mud. Many foreigners also travel around the world and visit South Korea to enjoy this craziest festival. This festival is closed with a large display of fireworks.

Also to enjoy this crazy festival one needs to buy tickets. People can either buy tickets online or directly at the venue.
