“Kpop” is a word that's familiar to several folks now. But, that wasn’t the case 30 years ago. Between Psy’s Gangnam Style and BTS, more and more people are entering into this musical world.
The ride of hustle and success which started from Seo Tai Ji gave birth to the 3BIG of the industry - SME, YGE, and JYPE!
And these then made their heavy contributions in spreading the craze of the Korean popular culture by debuting the legends of the tuneful entertainment world. A few of them are Shinhwa, H.O.T, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, and many more.
Soloists like BoA and Rain made headlines over headlines not only in Korea, but in neighboring countries like Japan, China, and you name it.
However, always in life, if some are going forward, a few get missed in between even after tremendous hard work - destiny maybe?
Hence, we thought of bringing these amazing stars together to your account. Giving you a glimpse of the underrated K-pop groups and songs!
- WEKI MEKI
- GOLDEN CHILD
Weki Meki group comprises eight members Ji Su-Yeon, Elly, Choi Yoo-Jung, Kim Do-Yeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy, managed by Fantaigo Entertainment. They debuted in 2017.
Weki Meki has a large concept and an amazing stage presence. Unfortunately, the group is underrated since their debut, however, as hard workers do, they never discouraged themselves from making good music.
K-pop retro trends were originally made by Weki Meki. The girls constantly used to experiment with their sounds.
But often changing a lot of concepts risks your chances in the world. Weki Meki turns out to be an example of that. The group started diverting their concepts in their songs to try new things, which unluckily resulted in losing popularity.
Daeyeol, Y, Jangjun, Tag, Seungmin, Jaehyun, Jibeom, Donghyun, Joochan, and Bomin - the magnificent members formed under Woollim Entertainment. They debuted on 28th August 2017 with “DamDaDi''.
Originally, this talented group consists of eleven members, later Jaeseok had to leave the group due to his health issues which were announced on 6th January 2018.
However, Golden Child was the first to be eliminated on Road To Kingdom, which is why this group is underrated though they had a chance to show their talent.
As a group, they achieved three amazing comebacks in 2020. Two were dark concepts and the third one was Pump It Up.
The Golden Child group has just started, so it’s just the beginning. Maybe we will see them achieving their goal in 2021.
Mimi, Hana, Haebin, Nayoung, Sejeong, Sally, Soyee, Mina, and Hyeyeon - these gorgeous girls made their debut on 26th June 2016 with a mini-album Act 1.
Unfortunately, the ninth member Hyeyeon left the group in 2018. Jellyfish Entertainment agency confirmed that the group would be splitting by the end of 2020.
However, in the same statement, it was mentioned that they will remain under the contract as solo artists. Gugudan members are very hardworking and they have been getting a lot of love from their fans.
As the group, they sure got separated after four years, which lessened their popularity for obvious reasons.
Up10tion is a ten members group including Jinhoo, Kuhn, Kogyeol, Wei, Bitto, Wooshin, Sunyoul, Gyujin, Hwanhee, and Xiao, under Top Media Entertainment. They debuted on 10th September 2015, with their mini-album Top Secret.
The group was disbanded on 6th January 2020 due to the Produce 101 Vote Manipulation Controversy.
Debuting on April 10, 2019, Songhee, Yiyeon, Simyeong, Jungwoo, and Seungeun, all together in BVNDIT, is the first girl group created under MNH Entertainment.
The group stands for “Be Ambitious N Do It”. They had made their comeback with their mini-album Carnival.
However, it is upsetting to be they are not that well known though their songs are energetic and their voices are very unique which blend together very well.
- Say My Name (ANS)
- Hands Up (Cherry Bullet)
- Woo! aah! (Woo!aah!)
- One (Lucid Dream) (Golden Child)
- Bouncy (Rocket Punch)
Say My Name
On January 10th the group, ANS, released “Say My Name” and they premiered the song on “M! Countdown” a day earlier.
The International fans who noticed the song were well-loved by them however the song did not go that well in South Korea.
On the contrary, it was well-loved among some of the International fans who came across it. This year in August, except for Haena all the members declared they terminated their contracts with the company and that the group is disbanded.
On February 11th, 2020, Cherry Bullet made their come back with “Hands Up”, which was their first official release since the departure of Kokoro, Mirae, and Linlin.
The song did not chart in the Gaon Chart but topped at number 99 on Korea’s Billboard Hot 100 charts and number 11 on Billboard US’s World Charts.
It was universally more successful with international fans than with Korean netizens, before people could appreciate the song their comeback came and went.
Last year, on May 15, the group came up with a song followed by their own group's name.
The song failed to chart, but the girls were still nominated for three Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMAs).
Their album “Exclamation”, however, topped at number 20 on Gaon Album Chart.
The group surprisingly saw an increasing fanbase in Vietnam.
On June 23rd, 2020 Golden Child released the song “One (Lucid Dream)” as the title track of their fourth EP, “Take a Leap.”
The EP itself topped number 3 on the Gaon Album Charts and Japanese Oricon Charts number 19. While the album also charted high, unfortunately, the song itself did not work.
Compared to their other releases it was considered more successful due to the hype they received through Road to Kingdom. Needless to say, it was overshadowed by other releases in that year.
On February 10th, 2020 Rocket Punch released the song “Bouncy” and on the very same day THE BOYZ released “Reveal.”
The song did not chart in Gaon Charts but did top on Billboard Korea’s Hot 100 Charts at number 97. The EP came from, “Red Punch,” which was able to top on Gaon Album Charts at number 4 but could only sell around 12,500 copies.
