Black Day : How Koreans Celebrate Being Single

Have you ever head about “Black Day”? It happens every year in Korea, on the April 14th. During that day, people celebrate being … single. Yes, single !

As you may already know, there are two days for couples, Valentines’ Day and the White Day. Each of them happens on February 14th and March 14th. During that two unofficial holidays, couple exchange gifts. Firstly, it’ll be women offering to their boyfriend, and the following month, men will return the gift.
But what about single people? They receive nothing. That’s why the Black Day appeared. During this day, singles will be wearing black clothes and gather together – when there isn’t a worldwide pandemic – to complain about the lack of love life. And the tradition is to eat a dish called Jjajangmyeon. As Pepero is a famous snack for couple, Jjajangmyeon 짜장면 is the food eaten by singles during the Black Day!

If you’re asking yourself what’s Jjajangmyeon, it’s a noodle dish topped with a thick sauce made of jjajang 짜장 (black bean paste), diced pork and vegetables. And, if you are vegetarian, you can also cook them without meat.
But don’t worry, you can still try this dish even if it’s not “Black Day” in Korea. As it is really famous and one of the non-spicy dish that you can find in the country, you will almost find one restaurant in every city that sells it. So, don’t forget to try it when you come in Korea!

And while waiting for your dream travel , you can also cook it yourself by following a recipe such as the ones under 😊

Or find instant Ramyun with that flavor!
